Three people in the chain,
in their own words.

Each quote below was said out loud or written down, sent back to the person for approval, and published in the wording they chose. Nobody here is named beyond what they agreed to.

“We are paid per kilo of cherry at the gate, on the day we deliver. What we have never seen is what the bag sells for at the other end.”

The Gedeb cooperative, relayed through our importer · Gedeo Zone, Ethiopia

Asked by email through the importer, who translated the reply and confirmed it with the cooperative before sending it back. They read the ET-0426 cost table and agreed we could publish the FOB line. They asked that individual names stay off the site.

The pilot roast in progress, with the roaster or their hands in frame if they agree.

“Everyone asks about the profile. Nobody asks what the green cost. I can tell you the roast loss to the gram and I cannot tell you what the farm got, because I was never told.”

The contract roaster · Brooklyn, New York

Recorded standing at the drum during the first ET-0426 batch. He weighed the green in and the roasted out in front of us, which is where the 8.00 lb / 6.75 lb line in the record comes from. He agreed to be quoted by role, not by name or shop.

The first delivery handoff, with the bag and the recipient’s hand in frame.

“I typed the code in before I opened the bag. I did not expect the receipt to be the interesting part.”

The first subscriber · Brooklyn, New York

Said at the door on the first Brooklyn round, then confirmed by message the next day. She had the site open on her phone while we were still standing there, which is how we found out the trace box was too small to tap on a phone.

Before pressing record
  • Ask permission before recording. Then record the agreement at the start.
  • Ask how they want to be named — full name, first name, or role only.
  • Send the exact quote back before it goes on the site.
  • Keep the original file. With no recording, label the text a paraphrase.
